A collection insured at the wrong figure is a problem waiting to happen. Under-insure, and a claim falls short of what it costs to put right. Over-insure, and you pay a premium every year against a sum you would never recover. Insurers increasingly want an independent specialist valuation before they will write cover on coins and medals at all.
B and G Coins provides written insurance backed valuations for private collectors, insurance companies and brokers. This is a chargeable professional service, and we confirm the fee before any work begins. Fees will generally relate to complexity, volume and final valuation.
Replacement value is not probate value
The two are commonly confused, and the difference matters. A probate valuation states what a collection would fetch on the open market. An insurance valuation states what it would cost to replace at retail prices — which, for scarce material, is usually the higher figure and sometimes substantially so. A collection valued for probate and then handed straight to an insurer is very often under-insured.

Keeping a valuation current
Both Numismatic collectable value and Metal prices move and collector demand shifts. A valuation more than a few years old is unlikely to reflect what replacement would cost today. We are glad to revisit a collection we have valued before.
About the valuer
Valuations are carried out by Dr Nicholas P George FRNS, a Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society, the BBC’s ‘Coin Guy’, and consultant to auctioneers and museums. He has dealt in coins, medals and tokens since 1977 and holds professional indemnity insurance.
